World Radio Day

World Radio Day is an annual United Nations (UN) event that promotes the importance of the radio in communicating information worldwide. It is celebrated annually on February 13.

Radio is the mass medium reaching the widest audience in the world. It is also recognized as a powerful communication tool and a low cost medium. Radio is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people's educational level.

Following a request from the Spanish Radio Academy, on 20 September 2010 Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day.

There was deliberations among the member nations in UNESCO's 36th General Conference on 3 November 2011. It was proclaimed that World Radio Day be celebrated on February 13 which is also the the day when United Nations Radio was established in 1946.
